Whether you are a first time skier or you used to ski and would like to try again the sport can be enjoyed successfully. Depending on where you live there are adaptive skiing programs offered where the low vision or blind skier is offered free instruction or a reduced rate. Some places even offer a reduced rate for friends or family members that would like to be a guide. Most places have you fill out an Adaptive Application Waiver so make sure you call before showing up.

Skiing allows the blind or visually impaired person the ability to move freely and independently, in a controlled setting, in a physical and fast paced sport. This is an exhilarating experience and provides the skier with confidence and a physical independence that may not have been felt before.

There may be some concerns for those who have never taken a risk to try something like this but do not let that stop you. Guides are available and the instructors are amazing and understanding. The guide will provide the skier with verbal descriptions and instructions while traveling behind the skier or preceding them. A portable amplification system is often used as well. Visible identifying vests are also worn to prevent other skiers from skiing between them.

Our very own Tracy Andrews has been part of an adaptive skiing experience and said it was truly amazing and her sense of accomplishment carried over into other areas of her life. Her husband was trained to be her guide and they bonded closer together through their skiing adventure. She said that the instructors made her feel a part of with no pity which allowed her to feel like she was just as entitled to ski as a sighted person. "Each time I went out on the slopes my skills improved and that's a phenomenal feeling. Flying down the hill and maneuvering down the slopes was so awesome and to share that with my friends and husband was great"

This is a great way to stay active in the winter and to be a part of something that you can enjoy with others. So get out there this winter and go for it. You will not regret it and the experience will hopefully inspire you to continue to challenge yourself in other areas of your life. It sure did for Tracy. She has been away from the sport for awhile but would like to start up again and involve her kids. Stay tuned!

Some places that offer programs for the visually impaired are Ski Sundown in New Hartford, CT. 860-379-7669 and Sugarloaf Mountain Resort in Carrabasset Valley Maine. Sugarload is offering a week long program in February. Until I started working at Vision Dynamics I thought I knew what it meant and I was so wrong.
Like most people, I assumed that if you were diagnosed with low vision it could be taken care of with a pair of glasses and you would be on your merry way. This is not true. Below is the definition and description of low vision to clear up common misconceptions.
Low vision is a class of visual disabilities, which result in progressive loss of visual acuity and functionality and cannot be cured by medication, surgery or corrective lenses. Low vision disorders include age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, and certain types of stroke-related vision disabilities.
Low Vision is the third leading cause of disability among seniors - ranking only behind heart disease and arthritis. It is a major cause of falls leading to fractures, head injuries and hospitalizations. It is also a significant cause of depression as it robs seniors of the opportunity to lead safe, independent and fulfilling lives. It leads to enormous health care costs for the elderly.
Symptoms of low vision include difficulty recognizing objects at a distance, distinguishing colors (particularly in the green-blue-violet range), and seeing well up close (such as reading or cooking). Those afflicted with low vision often cite difficulty recognizing faces of friends and relatives, doing things around the house because lights seem dimmer, and matching colors of clothes. Age-related macular degeneration affects 26% of those over 75 and strikes one American every three minutes.
If you or a loved one is struggling with any of these symptoms there is hope and help available even if your Doctor has said to you, "I am sorry there is nothing else I can do for you".
There is something that can be done about it. Come to Vision Dynamics and let us help you try a new way.

Create a Very Merry Holiday Season

You can thrive, not just survive, and create a wonderful holiday season this year. You just need to do 4 things.

Keep your expectations rational

Take care of yourself

Take control of your time and limit your commitments

Embrace your family and friends

These tips will help you reduce stress, relax, and breeze through the holiday season feeling grounded and in control.

Rational Expectations:

The most important contributors to a happy holiday season are the expectations you create in your own mind. You can't make them perfect - People get sick, recipes flop, and family members don't always get along.

Coworkers aren't always kind to each other.

You don't have to have the perfect party, perfectly behaved children, or the most beautifully decorated home. Give yourself a break. You will b happy you did.

Take Care of Yourself:

Taking care of your physical and mental health is the single most important aspect of creating holiday health and happiness.

Eat healthy. When you eat better you feel better and you have more energy.

Take some time during your day to relax and breath. It can be as simple as enjoying a hot cup of tea and focusing on what is going well.

The more relaxed and confident you are the higher your self esteem will be.

Don't try to diet during the holidays, it will make you feel like a failure and ruin the festive nature of parties and celebration.

Time and Limit your Commitments:

Why does every new program or process at work have to start on January 1st? With this starting date in mind, your holiday season will always be a nightmare of over-commitment. You are already rushing with the normal holiday happenings. Why roll out a new process to complicate the holiday season and raise your level of work-related stress?

You are in charge of the number of commitments you make. You don't have to hold a party at your home or say yes to every one you are invited to. You can even schedule a party in February instead and wait till the craziness of the holidays have settled down.

Enjoy Family and Friends:

Spend the time of your life with the people you love. Make sure you don't spend the holidays trying to save the world and please those around you. Instead share laughter and memories. Take time for personal reflection. Start a new tradition or follow through with old ones. Focus on what is right and going well instead of what is not. Be grateful for who is in your life instead of dwelling on who is not.

No matter what holiday you celebrate, these tips will make them happier, healthier, and more fun. Please accept our wishes for a happy healthy season for you and yours.

Holiday Gifts for Low Vision

During this holiday season finding the ideal gift for a loved one with low vision doesn't have to be a challenge. Use high contrasting colors when decorating your table to help things stand out. For example use dark colored place-mats and light colored plates or vise versa.
2. Put bold colored throws on your couches
3. Use dark colored towels in your bathroom.
4. Decorate your banister with festive lighting and place brightly colored tape strips along the edge of each step to help it stand out.
5. I found this very helpful.
"When you lose your eyesight, you lose contact with things. When you lose your hearing, you lose contact with people." Helen Keller (1880-1968)
Vision and hearing are the two senses that are an essential part of our everyday life. We depend on them constantly as we go through life. Whether we are at work or enjoying a leisurely day with our family these two senses allow us to interact with lobed ones more completely. Unfortunately many people in the United States go undiagnosed with hearing loss despite its importance. Didi you know that an estimated 1.7 million adults age 65 and over report both vision AND hearing loss?
There are many causes for hearing and vision loss which result from somewhat similar genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Exposure to oxidative stress, cigarette smoking and atherosclerosis and its risk factors have been linked to age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and hearing loss. No matter what the cause, these two impairments were found to have a cumulative effect on a persons function and well being affecting loved ones both mentally and physically.
Because of the strong connection between our vision and our hearing we are pleased to offer a fully integrated hearing and vision solution.
It makes sense to evaluate these two senses and provide treatment options in one location. While there are many causes of hearing loss, AGE and NOISE EXPOSURE are the two most common causes. The normal aging process begins to take its toll around age 55, but exposure to loud noises (like music and industrial noise) may cause problems to occur much earlier in life. Vi son loss and hearing loss often occur in the same people, sometimes linked be a specific disease an other times purely because both problems affect us as we get older. The important thing is that both of these key senses are critical to daily life, and while the loss of either can be debilitating, the loss of BOTH will affect every minute of every day in some way. For about 90% of all cases of hearing loss, hearing aids or hearing devices of some kind are the best available treatment options. Hearing loss and vision loss both begin to deteriorate around the age of 55: therefore patients with visual impairments may soon experience similar hearing problems as well. In a recent scientific study of 2,400 people, with an average age of 70, researchers found a significant link between vision loss and hearing loss.
Our goal is to empower and inspire people to lead happy and independent lives. We are so excited to open (See and Hear America) our hearing and vision solutions center.

NOW WHAT

Today you find out that your child has been diagnosed "legally blind" and this will change the way he or she sees the world. Maybe you are scared, angry, concerned about their future or not sure how you will get through the rest of the day. These feelings are normal and you are not alone. Just remember how you react has an impact on your child. Being "legally blind" does not mean they cannot see. Your next step is to be your child's advocate in every way you can. Do NOT feel sorry for them. Accept the challenge and move forward and find ways to support and embrace this new journey that you are all on. Get them involved in activities, whether its ice skating- horseback riding or swimming. Allow them to continue what they enjoy, or try something new. Don't for one second think that your child's future will be less successful than a someone who is sighted. Remember that vision is an inside job and we don't need sight for that.
One of the first steps is to have the doctor submit a form to the state, eye report form, which will start the process of receiving support for your child. Every child has the ability to live a full and prosperous life if you let them. Don't enable them, allow them to learn ways to participate with their peers and do things for themselves. As a parent it is your job to encourage, support and help when it's needed. Be their cheerleader and advocate. Ask what is available for services and how you can help the process in school. There are many resources that will involve the families as well.
This website can be a starting point for you and your family to begin the process of gathering information. You will quickly realize that you are not alone. Make sure that you ask as many questions as you can possibly think of in order to receive all the help you can. Your child is entitled to an education like all kids and may need some adaptive technology to help aid in the process. Ask for training and go to every school meeting and support your child's right to learn.

Another great website can be found here Don't let being legally blind halt your dreams and aspirations for your child's future instead embrace it and visualize greatness! Anything and everything is possible.

Web Sevices for Visually Challenged

This is taken from "ReadWriteWeb.com"

At Vision Dynamics we try to find helpful information to pass along. Well, we came across something that we are very excited about!
Google has announced a new initiative to increase accessibility for visually challenged users on its major Web services. In advance of the upcoming school year, Google is rolling out accessibility impovements to Docs, Sites and Calendars. Google is hosting a live webinar for enterprise customers - which include education institutions - on Wednesday, September 21 at 12 p.m. Pacific time.
The enhancements include new keyboard shortcuts and enhanced screen reader support. Google says it has "worked closely with advocacy organizations for the blind to improve our products with more accessibility enhancements" over the past few months, and that more changes are on the way. "We believe that people who depend on assistive technologies deserve as rich and as productive an experience on the web as sighted users," says T.V. Raman, Google's technical lead on accessibility, "and we're working to help that become a reality."
To read more about this please visit this site.

SEE AND HEAR AMERICA

Exciting News!

Vision Dynamics now offers Hearing Aids, Assistive Listening Devices and Complementary Hearing Products.

Yes we have LISTENED to you. The thought of cooking or baking becomes a chore and maybe even a fear. Well we want you to know that thought can change if you want it to. With a few simple changes and some adaptations you can be baking in no time. You will have to tap into your other senses and utilize those more. Your sense of touch and smell will become important. There are many every-day items that can make working in the kitchen neater, safer, and more enjoyable. These products can help reduce kitchen accidents and give you the confidence to bake again. Some of the items are the EZ SEE measuring cup which allows you to accurately measure ingredients with easy to see large numbers with high contrast, colored measuring cups and spoons with large print that allow you to see your ingredients with ease due to the contrasting colors and red pouring bowls so you can see your yummy batter. How many times have you put flour or sugar in a white measuring cup and found it difficult to see. This can become very messy. Also there are jumbo and talking timers so we don't burn our master piece and there are extra long oven mitts and oven rack guards so we don't burn ourselves. All these items we sell at Vision Dynamics as well as many other items to help you with your daily activities. Here is a recipes you can try that we hope will be enjoyed.
1st: Chocolate Chip Cookies (pre-heat oven to 375)
Ingredients: 2 1/4 cups of all purpose flour
1 tsp of baking soda
1 tsp of salt
1 cup of softened butter (2 sticks)
3/4 cup of white sugar (granulated)
3/4 cup of brown sugar (packed)
1 tsp of vanilla extract
2 eggs
2 cups of chocolate morsels
1 cup of chopped nuts (optional)
1 cup of dried coconut (optional)
Combine: flour, baking soda, salt in a small bowl. Beat butter, both sugars, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Add eggs one at a time, use your sense of touch to feel the edge of the counter or side of the bowl and gently tap the egg and use your fingers to open the egg. This will take a bit pf practice. You can crack the egg in a separate dish so you can feel for shells. Make sure your hands are clean. Use a beater to mix and slowly add in your flour mixture. Then add your morsels. When your mixture is even, you can feel it, then you are ready to bake. Use a spoon, tsp or tbl spoon, and scoop the dough ( rolled into a ball) onto an un-greased baking sheet about 2 inches apart. You can space the dough using the spoon. Put down your first ball then place the spoon next to it and put your second ball down on the other side of the spoon until your sheet is filled. Then you are ready to put your cookies in the oven and don't forget to set your timer for 9 to 11 minutes. Pull them out, with your oven mitt, when the timer goes off and let them stand for 2 minutes before removing them to cool completely then enjoy. Just remember to take your time and have fun. It may take some time to get used to but the end result will be worth it.

Vision Dynamics at AER

Vision Dynamics had the pleasure of attending the AER Regional Conference in Boston this past weekend. The mission of AER is to support professionals who provide education and rehabilitation services to people with visual impairments, offering professional development opportunities, publications, and public advocacy.

AER's membership consists of a very diverse group, including administrators, vision rehabilitation therapists, orientation and mobility specialists, low vision therapists, itinerant teachers, and support personnel, who work with infants, children and teens, adults, seniors and veterans. Whatever the specialty, all AER members are committed to the principle that blind and visually impaired persons have unique needs which require specialized services delivered by trained individuals.

We had a flurry of people stopping at our booth eager to gather as much information about our adaptive technology so they could bring their knowledge back to those they serve. Our well staffed and energetic booth made an impact on many.

Charlie spoke on Saturday and inspired many with his positive outlook as he shared his own personal experiences and walked them through a few interactive exercises. He was able to tap into the strategies needed to deal with a vision impairment as an individual who can relate through his own trials and tribulations as well as his successes. Charlie had the ability to help educators be more in tuned with what kids might be thinking about there visual struggles and gave them tools to use to be more successful on their journey. Being diagnosed at such a young age and going through so many life changes, Charlies experiences with his own visual challenges was an inspiration to many. His energetic and compassionate personality allowed his message to be heard in a way that everyone could relate to.

Thanks so much to those that came and participated. We hope that we were able to help you solve some of your struggles. I don't think I am ready to accept it myself."

Like most individuals that are newly blind or those that have a vision impairment, showing some signs of shock and denial to their vision loss is common. According to the American Foundation for the Blind, "ten million people in the United States are blind or visually impaired." The major eye conditions are Cataracts, Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, and Diabetic Retinopathy.

There are many stages that a person may go through, when they find out that their life is going to change because of a visual diagnosis. Usually, shock and denial come first. Patients may become overwhelmed on hearing the news for the first time that they are losing their sight or may become blind. It can take their breath away. They may say "I can see just fine and I'm not going blind." They may even leave the appointment and not tell anyone. Self-pity and anger may come next. "Why me? What have I done to deserve this? Am I a bad person?" A patient may als0 become very isolated during this phase and stop doing activities that they once loved to participate in. This type of negative thinking can lead to the depression stage. They may have a feeling of despair and worthlessness as well as helplessness. At this point it is important for them to talk to someone so they don't give up or feel completely alone. Sometimes seeking professional help or searching out a support group is a helpful option. If at this point they are ready to move a step out of their despair and find a glimmer of hope then they are ready for the reassessment stage. Here is where they can evaluate their situation and try to move forward. Maybe by talking and sharing their experience with others they are able to examine their life and find meaning and realize they are not alone. Others too have felt the same way and have been able to move on and live happy successful lives. Some changes needed to take place and a new vision had to be seen but it's possible. With this kind of open mind and hopeful attitude they may be ready for the coping stage where they will go out and find information on ways to help them live with a visual impairment. They may reach out to their Doctor, support group, or family which leads to the final stage of acceptance. This is where the real healing can begin. Here the patients hopefully will gain some hope, self-confidence, and self-worth and begin to have and understanding with his/her vision loss and move towards a happy and productive way of life.

Having a positive attitude will impact people that are blind or visually impaired. Disability must be perceived as a challenge rather then a weakness. The key to ridding yourself of a bad attitude of helplessness is to clear your mind of all negative inner conversations and replace them with more hopeful messages. It is important to have a positive inner dialogue. While it is true that feeling of anger, resentment and helplessness are normal, it is best to move forward so that your physical debilitation does not override your mental and emotional faculties as well.

Do you see the glass half empty or half full? Those that go through life with a negative attitude will find it more difficult to find happiness. On the other hand, those that have a positive attitude will be able to find some happiness, much more successfully, in living every day. Losing vision or becoming blind is a hard thing to go through but with the right outlook you can go through this challenge. We all have a choice on how we deal with things that happen to us. Are we going to choose self-pity and not live life to our fullest potential or are we going to choose to live no matter what happens and focus on all the possibilities out there. Sometimes overcoming a traumatic experience and moving forward gives us a sense of accomplishment and triumph. Learning a new way of life can stimulate the brain and opens up a whole new and exciting way of life and shows us there is never a dull moment. I would rather learn a new way to live than be stuck in a hole of self-pity and pain. Remember, it's a choice.

What will you choose?

Vision Education

Hey friends! Airports present many obstacles to passengers traveling with a visual impairment. It is hard enough for a sited person to maneuver through a crowded airport and to stand in line to be patted down be some stranger with bad breath and an attitude. It can also be an adventure trying to board a plane with everyone trying to stuff there baggage into the overhead compartments squished together like a can of sardines. There is no such thing as personal space when boarding a plane. For someone who is totally blind and traveling with a seeing-eye dog or a cane, it is obvious that they may need some assistance. Those with low vision on the other hand, have to do a bit more asking, be more organized an get to the airport earlier than most. It is not fun knowing your plane is about to take off and you are running towards the gate not being able to read the signs, even though they can be quite large, praying that you are headed in the right direction. Planning ahead of time is the best way to save yourself from headaches and unwanted stress that can be a voided with a few phone calls and some simple steps.

Read about your destination and plan out what sights you will want to visit and contact those places to see if they offer special services. Pre purchase tickets if possible for parks and attractions.

Research accomodations. Foreign destinations are likely to have different accomodations and services from your home city or town. Prepare yourself by researching your trip before you plan your travels.

Make reservations whenever possible. Call the airline and ask about assistance and tell them your are visually impaired. Give them as much information as possible and let them know what you will need, (preboarding, luggage help, connecting to your next flight). Also let them know if you have a guide dog. Ask about seating arrangements, special meals, and shuttle and driving services. Some airlines allow trained service dogs to sit in the cabin. Continental and Delta are two airlines that will.

If you are meeting an airline representative or transportation company let them know what you look like and what you are wearing.

Plan for quide-dog restrictions. Some countries and states such as Hawaii either do not allow guide dogs for short visits or have quarentine requirements. Call your local guide-dog school for information on restrictions.

Carry written directions with you. Have them written down before leaving. Even if you can't read them you can ask for help by showing then to someone else if you get lost. It's also helpfu to have a copy of the exact addrss of where you are going. A driver may not know where a specific hotel is, especially if there are several with the same name.

Bring helpful technology with you such as a monocular, handheld magnifier, or mini video magnifier.

Keep necessities with you at all times. Carry your money, keys, tickets and passes in a pocket. If you happen to misplace your purse or wallet or someone takes it, you can still reach your destination. Keep some extra money handy for tips.

Notify others about your needs. Inform those around you about your visual limitation. Ask questions. If you can't see a monitor or find a gate at the airport ask a customer service representative or another traveler to help you find your way.

CARRY your cane. Whether you choose to use it or not for mobility puposes, your cane helps to identify others that you are visually impaired.

Ask about amusement park or other tourist discounts. Some of the amusement parks give discounts either to visually impaired visitors or to their sighted guides.

If you do bring a suitcase, remember its type and color. It may be helpful to putt a colorful piece of ribbon or a sticker to help you or anyone assisting you with easy identification.

Enhance your sensory experience by going on tours and visiting gift shops. Some tour groups allow travelers who are visually impaired to experience an exibit by tuching objects that are off limits to others. Gift shops often sell dmall cale replicas of monuments you can touch.

Remember that travel is supposed to be an adventure and exciting so take your time and enjoy all you can even if everything does not go exactly as planned. Happy Travels!

Questions to ask your Doctor when your vision changes.

At some point in our lives we all have an obstacle to overcome. For some of us the obstacle is changes to or loss of our vision that alter how we deal with our daily activities. This can be overwhelming and a bit scary. It often leaves us feeling somewhat hopeless and fearful for our future, but that does not have to be our only feeling. There are some steps that can be taken and questions to ask that can help us see a new way to deal with our diagnosis and bring us to a feeling of hope.

You have just found out that your vision is not what it used to be an you schedule an appointment with your Ophthalmologist. A good dialogue with your doctor is key to understanding what your risk factors are for certain eye conditions and to determining the best course of action to take. There are some very important questions to ask to help decide the next step.
On Risk Factors

Do I have any risk factors for eye disease (age, ethnicity, family history, etc.) ?

If I'm at risk for certain eye conditions, what can I do to lower or manage that risk

On Symptoms

What's causing my vision changes or symptoms?

Are my vision changes a normal part of aging, or could they be a sign of something more serious?

Will my vision problems get worse?

What can I do to correct or manage my eye or vision problems?

On Eye Tests

Based on my symptoms and risk factors, which eye tests should I receive and how often?

Did my eye exam or test results reveal any changes in my vision since my last eye exam? What d0 those changes mean?

Do I need additional testing, and if so, when should I come back for that, and how should I prepare?

Are there any potential side effects or risks posed by the eye tests I'll be receiving?

On Treatments

What are the treatment options for my vision loss or eye problems?

What are the possible side effects or risks involved in the treatment you recommend?

Are there any medications I should avoid, given my eye condition?

What habits should I adopt to help protect my eyes and reduce my risk of disease?

What else can I do to protect my remaining vision?

Are there any product on the market that can help me?

Before you walk away

Asked all your question? Great! Now, before you walk away, make sure you understand all the answers, and ask more questions if you don't. Understanding the information your doctor shares helps establish an effective working partnership with your eye doctor. Working together, your can take key steps toward maintaining good vision and reducing your risk for serious eye problems down the road.

One thing to be aware of is that not all Ophthalmologist have the answer. There are those times you may hear "there is nothing else that can be done". That may not be true. If your doctor has not mentioned a Low Vision Specialist or Adaptive Technology, then you may want to look into those options. Some Doctors are uninformed and have helped you to the best of their ability. There are many products on the market today that can enhance your quality of life and allow you to live as independently as possible. As a patient we need to take charge of our care and move forward to see what we can do instead of sitting on the sidelines focusing on what we have lost.

Hope this information helps as a guideline to getting started on your journey into a different way of life.

At Vision Dynamics we understand how difficult it can be living with low vision- the owner is legally blind and our sales diva Tracy is also legally blind. When we come to work, we are always hearing about the difficulties of simple tasks - such as, being legally blind and going to the grocery store. So, we decided it was time to share some tips on living with low vision, from someone with low vision - our very own Tracy! Tracy has been legally blind since the age of seven, but never let that stop her from living her life. She works, raises two kids, helps run her household and goes shopping. We all know that going to the grocery store can be a bit trick, but having low vision should not stop you from going and it can be an adventure. Here are some of Tracy's tips for a successful shopping experience: 1) Make a list of the items you need - write with a bold black pen and on bold lined paper so that it is easier to read. 2) If writing isn't an option - you can record your list on a small handheld recorder 3) Bring other adaptive devices - monocular, pocket video magnifier (such as an Optelec Compact+ or Aumed Eye-C), large print checks, folding cane, a handheld magnifier and most importantly PATIENCE and a POSITIVE ATTITUDE. Patience and a positive attitude may very well be the hardest, but the more you do on your own and the more comfortable you are in accepting your low vision, the easier this becomes. When you begin your shopping experience, it is helpful to use the white cane. It will not only help you navigate the store, but will also identify you to other shoppers as someone who is visually impaired. Since most stores have signs above each isle, use your monocular to see the distant signs so that you can orient yourself to the store layout. A monocular (just like binoculars, but it is only for one eye) can also be used in shopping malls to see store names in the distance. Once you are in the correct aisle or store, it is time to select the items on your list. Seeing the labels or price tags can be quite challenging, this is where your pocket video magnifier or handheld magnifier comes into play. Use these devices to magnify the small print. The pocket video magnifier is a useful tool because it allows you to take a picture if an item is high up or on a lower shelf. You can then view the picture up close. Using your magnifying devices will help insure that you are buying the peas on your shopping list instead of the green beans your kids hate. Here's a secret - sighted people buy the wrong items all the time! Perhaps us sighted folks should take some advice and slow down. During the shopping process there may be people who wonder what you're doing, or ask if you need help. It is OK to explain to them you are visually impaired and it may even lead into some interesting conversations. They may know someone who is visually impaired and that is the best time to educate on living independently! If you are uncomfortable explaining yourself, it is also okay to say " no thank you" or, if you are struggling and someone offers to help it is definitely okay to accept their help. Once you have found all of your items it is time to check out - this can be an intimidating experience but don't worry - there are things you can do! Having large print checks from the bank will make it easier to fill out the checks ( these are available by request at most banks). Most stores have credit card machines that allow you to sign anywhere in the box, which is great because you don't have to worry about staying on a line! If you need to use your debit card you can always use your handheld magnifier to see the keypad, but sometimes this is complicated because the screen is difficult to see. In this case, Tracy has asked the cashier for help. When asking for assistance, just explain that you are visually impaired and cannot see the display, and the cashier will help you complete your transaction. If you are using cash to pay, there is a money reader called Money Talks that identifies what denomination each bill is. Tracy also folds her bills a certain way, so that she can differentiate between different denominations. Another important item to have with you is a cell phone. This is great to have if you need to call for a ride or your spouse calls because they forgot to ask you to pick up something that wasn't on your list. Remember that shopping with low vision can be a successful experience! Most important is to have patience and a sense of humor can go along way. Tracy recalls a family vacation when she was shopping with her daughter. They were in a store that had ow lighting. Tracy was wearing a baseball cap (this further impaired her vision) and the store was filled with t-shirts, bags, purses, and other touristy items. Now, Tracy LOVES purses and she began looking at several on a rack in front of her. She found one that was particularly nice and she started to touch it - then the bag began to move! Tracy looked up and noticed the purse was attached to a person. The woman was standing in front of her with the bag hanging from her shoulder. Tracy laughed and quickly apologized and explained that she was visually impaired. The woman probably thought her purse was being stolen, and was relieved when she found out it wasn't. Just remember, don't be afraid to use adaptive devices, keep a sense of humor, stay calm and have patience - shopping can be fun! These are famous words, said by so many of us who have lost our sight; or enough of it that they call us legally blind. Which raises a great question, who are they? Why do so many of us concern ourselves with what they call us? Or, even worse, what they think of us? Would we really be happier if they thought all good things about us? What makes the visually impaired so important that people spend their time thinking about us? Are they actually thinking of us or are they thinking of themselves?

Why is it we are so concerned with what we don't have? Is sight what makes us whole? Would I be happier if I had all my sight? I don't think so. So many people believe if they had just one thing, they would have true happiness. The reality is, once that one thing is granted to them they seek something else; never finding real, true happiness within themselves.

From my travels, and my different speaking engagements, I learned there are many people who are waiting for something outside themselves to provide their happiness. What I discovered for myself; and for those I have helped over the years; is that happiness is an inside thing. Happiness comes from within. I am good enough and I accept myself exactly as I am in this moment. That statement can only come from a truly happy person. Great, that sounds easy! I'll say that statement and I'll be happy...why is it not working? In order to work, when you say it, you have to believe it.

Yes, it takes some work to get into this mindset; but, aren't you worth it? Yes, we are all worth it. Deep down inside each of us we have amazing gifts to share with the world. What excites me the most about helping people is after some cleaning and clarifying, we can all operate out of this place of happiness and begin to live the life of our dreams. Cleaning and clarity you ask? Yes, cleaning, clarity and vision is where it starts.

Before venturing forth into happiness, you need to have a clear vision. With a clear vision, with your mental blocks removed, a plan in place and one step at a time, you are on your way to real happiness.

You may be saying to yourself, "I am blind, I don't have vision!" I always say, we don't see with our eyes, we see with our brains. With this in mind, everyone can have clear vision in their lives.

As Helen Keller said, "The only thing worse than being blind is being sighted with no vision."

For me, even worse was being legally blind with no vision.

It is all about VISION and in my next article I will share with you the initial step we take to start focusing on what we want and how to create crystal clear vision.

Charlie Collins, Certified Professional Success Coach
Founder and C.E.O
Vision Dynamics & CCI, LLC

Vision Dynamics will be at the CannOTA Conference (Connecticut Occupational Therapists Association) on March 12th from 8:00 to 1:30. "I used to ride my bike in the woods and dream about what I would do when I grew up. I wanted to ride and race motorcycles and fly air planes!" Collins said enthusiastically. He grew up with five other brothers and sisters and as children, they were all a very close family and everyone got along well.

Before Charlie was officially diagnosed with macular degeneration, he had the sense that something was wrong and that he was "different" than the other children in school. "I noticed that I could not read as quickly as the other students in class, I started to feel like I was not as good as everyone else." Then, in 1977, after seeing many doctors in Connecticut, the family went to Mass Eye and Ear where Charlie and some of his brothers and sisters underwent many hours of testing. "I actually thought it was a lot of fun" recalls Collins, "I got to take a few days off from school and go up to Boston for all of the testing." After three years of testing, the doctors told Charlie and a few of his siblings that they were legally blind. "I thought when the doctors were done that they were going to fix what was wrong with me. But, they told me I had an eye disease and that I would be legally blind for the rest of my life because of this macular degeneration thing. These doctors who did all this testing, they couldn't make my vision get better and they said there was nothing they could do for us, that was the biggest let down for me. I immediately felt like I just wasn't good enough and that all my dreams were never going to happen, it was majorly depressing to me."

For the next several years, Charlie continued to fall deeper into the mind set of believing he was someone who couldn't do the things he wanted to do in his life. It made both middle and high school extremely difficult for him. Charlie recounted a guidance counselor who said, "Well, since you are legally blind, you might as well get used to the fact that you can't attend college and learn how to let others take care of you, because you can't do it for yourself. We'll have to figure out how you can just coast through your life." The negative attitude coming from the guidance counselor further degraded Collins and he had just about given up on any furture for himself.

He began visiting a local motorcycle dealership where he started to mow the lawn and maintain the grounds. One day, the owner of the facility asked Collins if he would be interested in working inside the dealership selling motorcycles. Charlie went home that day and told his mother abouth the offer. He also told her that he couldn't understand why they would want someone who was legally blind to work at the dealership. "When are you going to stop settling for the good, and begin going for the greatness that is within you?" asked his mother. After much thought, Charlie accepted the position at the dealership. He began to enthusiastically learn everything he could about the business and soon became their top performing salesperson. After a few years, the owner approached him and asked him if he wanted to become part owner.

Charlie accepted the offer and spent several years as the Vice President. "I sold a lot of motorcycles and made a lot of money, and it was great. After a while though, I realized that even though I had accomplished many goals, I wasn't completely happy. I felt like somet6hing was missing, I wasn't feeling whole." Charlie realized that individuals with vision impairments and other disabilities can achieve their goals. Coming from a past of depression, and overtime learning how to overcome obstacles and use adaptive devices, Charlie wanted to help others realize that they could do teh same. "I wanted to start doing something to help other people," he said. "So, I decided to leave the motorcycle business to find a career doing soemthing to help others."

In 1997, Charlie opened Vision Dynamics, a store filled with products and services designed to help people with low vision, blindness, and learning difficulties. "I asked my father, George Collins, if he would come by and help me hang slat wall and he has been wroking with me ever since that day! With Vision Dynamics, I am working with people who are going through much of the same things I did. We are able to provide them with tools to help individuals learn to be successful and independent. Our staff is also able to help them overcome the negative attitude and to understand that they too can accomplish great things in their lives. If the needs of a customer become such that they need the help of a low vision doctor, we have Dr. Randy Kinkade available at our facility to address those needs."

Charlie also travels around the country sharing his experience, strenth, and hope with others. "It doesn't matter if the people in the audiences are visually impaired or not, we all have struggles in our lives, these struggles give us choices. We can choose to let the negative side beat us down, or we can choose to turn the negatives into positives and work towards accomplishing our goals."

When I started to write this article, I realized that I heard two voices from Charlie. When we discussed his life before he found his calling, I heard a low adn quiet tone to his voice. When we discussed his career at Vision Dynamics, I heard a loud and enthusiastic voice.

Collins said, "We don't see with our eyes, we see with our brains and with the correct attitude and outlook we can accomplish anything!" The last thing Charlie said was, "Although my sight may be bad, I have clear vision- hence, Vision Dynamics, the clear vision company!"

If you would like to know more about the products and services offered at Vision Dynamics, you can reach them in one of the ways listed below:

Vision Dynamics

470 West main Street

Cheshire, CT 06410

Phone: 203-271-1944

Fax: 203-271-3997

http://www.visiondynamics.com/

Feeding Our Eyes!

By June M. Lay, Lifestyle Columnist - HealthNewsDigest.com
Aug 10, 2010 - 8:43:23 AM

We feed our hunger, our appetite and most of us feed our cravings, at least once in awhile. But how often do we feed our body mainly for the purpose to nourish and protect? Okay, in other words, how many times during this past week did we consider how our food choices are connected to the function, appearance and health of our body? This week, let's discuss "Feeding Our Eyes" because they are vital to our health and happiness.

There's a saying that "Our Eyes are Our Windows to the World" (Okay, this is my version of the saying), and I think most of us would agree that our eyes are very important. Unfortunately, even those of us who were lucky enough to be born with 20/20 vision need to protect ourselves from the two most common age related eye diseases, Cataracts, and Macular Degeneration. Macular Degeneration in particular, is a disease that we can help ourselves prevent by eating those wonderful, colorful phytochemicals known as the Carotenoids!

Why? Well, the retina in our eyes contains the highest concentration of pigments in our body, which absorb the sun's rays (acting as antioxidants) and which overtime (I'm referring to the aging process unfortunately) we start to lose. [Check out Vision Dynamics' Ultraviolet and Infrared Absorbing Sunglasses] Studies have found that those of us with the lowest amount of the phyto's Leutein and Zeaxanthin circulating in our blood, have the highest rate of age-related macular degeneration. But let's not fret, we can replenish these pigments with food. Studies have also shown that people with macular degeneration have been found to have lower levels of zeaxanthin and lutein in the macula itself than people without—which supports the premise that these antioxidants provide some protection. Since our eyes are so important to us, let's think about replenishing the pigments in our eyes with nature's chemicals that are found in foods.

So, what can we eat to help keep our eyesight?
Eggs. Yes, whole eggs contain a high bio-available form of Leutein (meaning very useable by our body). One study used designer eggs with the highest amount found in the yolks, but regular supermarket eggs still contain high amounts.

Spinach. Popeye was misinformed about spinach's high iron content, (it may contain a high amount of iron, but it's not a good source of Bio-available iron) but it does contains high Bio-available amounts of these colorful carotenoids.

Vitamin C, Vitamin E. These important vitamins act as antioxidants and they are also found in our eyes in high concentrations. So, citrus fruits as well as all fresh fruits and veggies all contain Vitamin C, including once again spinach! Vitamin E is found in Spinach (Popeye was on the right track here), Broccoli, Sweet Potatoes, Avocado, Chick Peas, and the highest Bio-available forms of E (with the most calories unfortunately) are found in Soybean oil, Corn oil, Canola oil and Cashews. So, with these last few foods, let's think moderation as in 1 tablespoon?

Here's to "Feeding Our Eyes"!

Adaptive Technology Available for People with Low Vision

Have you ever felt unsafe because of your vision? Do you worry about things because you think you will be unable to do them because of low vision? Are you sad, insecure, and hopeless because of what you are right now? Think again.

The problem with low vision started ever since man began to see. Vision is one of our primary senses by which we rely almost all the time when doing things like cooking, walking, reading, playing, and other everyday activities. However, Low vision interferes so much with our daily life that it disables us from doing things the way they were done before. Worst case, Low vision cannot be adequately corrected with medical, surgical, therapy, conventional eyewear or contact lenses.

For many decades, men and women with low vision have suffered from depression, hopelessness, and insecurity due to the fact that there was no remedy available for persons with visual impairment. It was not until 1284 when Salvino D'Armate (Italy) invented the first ever wearable eye glasses.

Today, Science and Technology have advanced well enough to make life here on Earth much easier. It has also offered us a wide array of products that it can provide for us.

One of the most remarkable advancement in terms of technology is its branch called "Adaptive Technology."

Adaptive technology pertains to a wide variety of electronic items that enable an even wider variety of people with disabilities and seniors, to live independently. Many of the devices are based on computer technology. It can help you not only to restore your sight, but to restore your hope, dreams and your ability to snatch back your independence.

Some adaptive technology products are:

A Video Magnifier or Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV)

A video magnifier or closed-circuit television (CCTV) uses a video camera to display a magnified image on a monitor or television screen. Video Magnifiers are used by people with low vision to help with reading and writing difficulties caused by visual impairments. The video magnifiers we carry come in various shapes and sizes to meet any low vision need.

Optical Scanners and Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

The purpose of optical scanners and optical character recognition (OCR) software is to make print materials accessible using synthesized speech. The OCR software takes a picture of text that is on a print page, coverts it to computer text and then displays it on a screen. The text is done by the optical scanner. Some optical scanners and OCR software that are used by individuals who are blind or severely visually impaired include software that will read the document using a speech synthesizer.

Notetakers and Accessible PDAs

People without vision loss can take advantage of various types of personal data assistant (PDA) devices. Most are not useable by persons who are blind or visually impaired.

An electronic notetaker which may have a Braille or a Qwerty type keyboard is basically an adapted PDA device. Users can do the same type of tasks that a typical PDA system allows.

These activities can include:
• Taking notes
• Allowing for print or Braille output of input
• Reading e-mail
• Calculating math
• Setting a timer
• Creating calendar events
• Playing music or digital books
• Uploading or downloading information from a computer
• Playing accessible games

Because the electronic note takers are adapted for persons who are blind or visually impaired, they have built-in speech output.

Screen Reading Software

Screen Reading Software attempts to identify the visual display and provides voice output or refreshable Braille. Screen Reading Software may be stand alone or be in combination with other assistive technology, such as screen magnifiers

Screen Enlargement SoftwareSoftware

People with low vision often benefit from text, icons, menus, and graphics being enlarged. Also, some people can see better when the foreground (text) and background colors are changed. Screen enlargement software allows various magnifications of fonts, graphics, icons, and menus. Also, users can adjust colors on the screen for greater contrast.

Refreshable Braille Displays

A refreshable Braille display is a device that is added to a computer. The refreshable Braille display provides the text that is displayed on the screen in Braille. As the user moves the cursor on the page the Braille on the device is updated. A refreshable Braille display is controlled by speech output software.

Braille and Tactile Embossers

A printer takes a document and makes it print, a Braille embosser takes the document and displays the text in Braille.

Braille transcription or translation software converts literary, textbook, music, and math formats into Braille code. This code is sent to a Braille embosser or printer. While the software makes it very easy to convert text to Braille, a sighted person using Braille transcription or translation software should have a working knowledge of Braille.

For thousands of years, technology has always aimed to make us live a better life. These few things that these gadgets can do for you have helped many individuals with low vision live a very fruitful life. Some testimonials say it helped them to snatch back the independence that they thought they had lost. Right now, it has been tested and proven that these products work.

Life choices can either make or break your life. It is really important to think over the things that we need to risk in our lives each time we are making a decision. We need to take time to ask ourselves whether we need it or not. The decisions that we make from time to time should be able to help us cultivate our lives and eventually make it more fulfilling. In fact, we should bear in mind that we need to choose a decision that will make our lives better than it is currently.

Vision Dynamics Customer Donates Optelec Video Magnifier to Local Library

Record-Journal, Friday, April 16th, 2010

Donated machine is ‘manna' to library patrons

By Andrew Perlot
Record-Journal Staff

MERIDEN - There are thousands of books in the Meriden Public Library, but for some, the wealth of knowledge they contain remains an elusive blur. Or at least that was the case until Thursday, when an anonymous donor gave the library a reading magnification machine worth just under $3,000.

Looking at the machine, which was made by a Dutch company called Optelec and consists of a large flat-screen monitor, a high-tech camera and an adjustable platform for holding reading material, library Board of Directors President Joan Edgerly called it "manna from heaven."

Dave ZajacCharlie Collins, owner of Cheshire based Vision Dynamics, Charlie Collins, of Vision Dynamics demonstrates an Optelec machine given to the Meriden Public Library by an anonymous donor Wednesday. The machine helps the visually impaired read.Stick any sort of written text under the camera and a dial allows you to magnify it up to 72 times its normal size. The push of a button turns the background color of the page to black, making the text stand out in a vivid white.

Although the donor of the machine did not wish to be identified, Library Director Karen Roesler said the donor wished "for the machine to be used for the love of reading." The library has many vision-impaired patrons who struggle to read the small print in its books and magazines, Roesler said.

Although the library already has a computer equipped with a screen capable of magnifying digital text, the new machine, which will be placed near the existing computer in the library's main room, opens the world of printed text to vision-impaired readers. Roesler was contemplating ways to raise money for such a machine before she received a phone call from the donor, she said.

The machine came from Vision Dynamics in Cheshire, which specializes in products that assist the visually impaired. Vision Dynamics' owner, Charlie Collins, told the small crowd gathered at the library Thursday he was diagnosed with juvenile macular degeneration in early childhood, and is legally blind.

He spent his early years concentrating on what he couldn't do because of his impairment, and "I kind of limped through life," he said. Eventually, Collins said he started concentrating on solutions and using magnifiers and lights to be able to function in society independently.

Technology has advanced so fast in the last decade that there are technological aids that can dramatically improve the lives of the visually impaired, he said, adding that hopes library patrons will enjoy the new machine. "The sky is the limit," Collins said.

What It’s Like To Live With a Legally Blind Person

At first, I played the caretaker role which did not last long. My husband has been legally blind since age 13. I learned early on not to enable him. While driving the car, I will read funny signs out or license plates out loud. If a nice race car is approaching, I tell him so he can look when it goes by. With the great increase in technology, he is able to do so much more on his own. We have added special lighting to our home and adapted necessary items to make it more comfortable for him. The TV was hung on the wall so he could see it. Furniture is placed strategically near the TV or a certain lamp. It shows me what a precious gift it is to have eyesight, when living with a person who has legal blindness.

Book Sense: digital audio player

The Book Sense which is a digital audio player is another educational and entertaining product from GW Micro and is available at Vision Dynamics.

There are several things which I especially like about the Book Sense such as louder volume, an easy to navigate menu structure, and the choice of two voices, Kate and Paul. Its basic values are Consumer primacy, empowerment and the independent living philosophy in which the focus lies in the belief that the issues of dependence and access lie not with the individual, but with the community’s attitudinal and architectural barriers. Thus, the work of Centers for Independent Living is directed primarily at advocating for the removal of physical and psychological barriers and assisting consumers in dealing with those barriers.

Oak Hill helps people with disabilities experience rich, fulfilling lives in communities throughout Connecticut. It was to be used in the animation of the pumpkin that turns into a coach for the picture “Cinderella”. Unfortunately the pumpkin did not mature. Dr. Ott realized that the lights used for filming were too hot and they dried the plant and it died. He then created a lamp that provided natural daylight without the harmful effects of excessive heat. That led to the healthy, full spectrum lights that we have today.

OttLite today offers full spectrum lighting, natural daylight lamps. Vision Dynamics now offers their new lamps, all using OttLite™ Illumination, with 508™ Technology. They are not luxury items but cannot be found in mass market stores. They are professional grade lamps available to the consumer in select stores and medical offices. They are available as floor lamps , desk and table lamps, portable, specialty, and magnification lamps.

Proper lighting is the most important aspect of preserving eyesight and it is one that we can all easily make use of without breaking our budgets. Everyone should and can protect their present eyesight in every way possible. Being legally blind since childhood, I am keenly aware of the need for conserving the eyesight you have right now. There is no easier way to start doing that than by using the best light available for all the things you love to do. Light up your home or office, use them for reading or craft work. They will even help your plants!

I have always provided easy solutions to our clients and adding these new products is another step in that direction. Give your eyes a break! They’ll love you for it.

Charlie Collins

Merry Christmas from Charlie Collins!

12-23-2009 –
I am more grateful than ever this Christmas season and it is not Christmas day. Funny for years how I believed that somehow, someday, things would be better on their own and all along all I needed to do was sit back and realize how good I have it.
Living with legal blindness owned me for years, but now (the only time I have) I am deeply grateful. I took charge of my life and now am happy, joyous, and free.

I wish for all a happy and successful Holiday Season. This could be the time to take complete control, 100% responsibility for our lives and be grateful for our blessings.

Making a decision to focus on what I can do, and not what I cannot do or did not have made a huge difference in my life.

Yes, I can read with a video magnifier, better lighting, pocket magnifier, a computer that reads to me and displays very large print, a camera that takes a picture of my magazines – actually any printed materials - and reads them back to me in a human sounding voice, and best of all many low tech items that enable me to live a much higher quality of life.

I am grateful for all the wonderful people in my life, for my clear mind’s eye, and the inspiration I get on a daily basis to help others with their struggles.

We are all blessed. Are you having doubts or questions about your vision? Can’t do more of the things you used to handle easily? Not sure what, if anything, you can do? I remember having all these thoughts when I was diagnosed with Juvenile Macular Degeneration. If you are struggling and looking for some answers try these everyday living questions.

Do you find it difficult for you to watch sports or the news, your favorite “soaps” on TV?

Can you see the regular print in newspapers, magazines or books?

Can you see the large print headlines in the newspaper?

Are you having difficulty when you use your computer, play cards, sew, or doing other favorite things?

Are you having difficulty reading labels on medicine bottles or prices at the supermarket?

Are you having difficulty reading your own handwriting or your personal mail?

Are you sometimes even having difficulty recognizing the faces of family or friends?

Does seeing in dim or bright lights seem to be getting more difficult?

If you answered yes to three of these questions and have not had an eye exam recently I advise
you to do so as soon as possible. Your problems may not be serious and you may only need a minor adjustment to your normal vision.

If you answered yes to more than three of these questions there is a definite need for a vision examination conducted by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

You are not alone in your doubts, perhaps even fears, about these questions. I personally know there are many ways to solve whatever problems you may be experiencing. My staff and I can help with advice or with the vision aids we deal with every day. Please call me or send me an e-mail today. I have been where you are so I know the way out.

You can help me help the vision impaired needy.

Charlie Collins:

I am a sufferer of Juvenile Macular Degeneration. I know what it is like to face life with the fear and anxiety that loss of vision brings to its victims. I also remember what happened when I realized there was help for my problem. Now I want to show people who are really hurting in this recession how they can still get help.

Using my large print, talking computer, I read a letter last week from an agency representing our local nonprofit agencies.

“With the nation’s unemployment rate over 10%, more and more middle-class families find themselves seeking services from nonprofit providers. The very people who were donating to nonprofit providers as recently as eighteen months ago are now applying for services.” states a recent letter from The Connecticut Nonprofit Human Services Cabinet (CNHSC) This agency represents well over 800 nonprofit providers across Connecticut that contract with the state to provide health and human services on its behalf

The letter added “The economic bubble has burst for our state. Unfortunately, there was no bubble to burst for nonprofit providers; we’ve been “doing more with less” for so long that many cannot remember what it is like to not struggle to balance a budget. The fiscal hardships that the state went through in 2009 are what nonprofit providers have been going through for years.”

This letter made the severity of the problems facing nonprofits very clear. I made up my mind right then that I was going to do something to help. You may be able to help too. Our company, Vision Dynamics in Cheshire, is well known to these agencies. Our reputation is one of always being ready, able and even anxious to help. We believe there are many vision aids not being used by the original purchasers for many reasons. We upgrade people’s aids many times and they usually keep their original product. We will be contacting those folks to offer to act as a drop off station for vision aids that are no longer being used. We have arranged to deliver these items to the non-profits that we and CNHSC support and make sure they get to the people that need them. I know we can make a difference in someone’s life that might not happen without this help.

If you or a loved one has one of these in your house, a magnifier or other item that is no longer being used because a stronger one was needed, someone can still use that original! There are other examples, readers, Braille products and many others. Our staff, most visually impaired themselves, is expert at placing the right tool in the right hands. You can drop off any vision aid product at Vision Dynamics, 470 West Main Street in Cheshire, CT. Items dropped off before December 15th may make a Merry Christmas gift for a needy person!

If you or a loved one needs vision aid advice but are unsure about the help available to you, please contact us, we may be able to put you in touch with an agency that can help you.

GM Teams With National Federation for the Blind to Develop Safe Sound Alert For Electric Vehicles

Electric cars are silent-running which for many people is a very good thing. It can potentially lead to some risk to the visually-impaired and other pedestrians however as some studies show.

A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published in September reveled bicyclists and pedestrians are struck at a significantly higher rate by hybrid as opposed to conventional cars.

GM has created a special pedestrian alert signal for the Chevy Volt. ”It is an active system,” says Chief engineer Andrew Farah, meaning the driver must activate it. Passive systems produce a sound at all times. The Volt pedestrian alert sound is a light volume horn-like sound similar to the chirp of some cars keyless entry indicators. ”It has to be automotive,” says Farah referring to the quality of the tone.

The fist generation Chevy Volt will not be equipped with a passive alert system. Competitor Nissan has reportedly developed a system for its upcoming LEAF EV which sounds like a floating car from the Bladerunner movie. GM is looking at the possibility of passive alert for future Volt generations. Other electric automakers such as Tesla remain uncertain.

Today GM has announced that they formed a partnership with the National Federation for the Blind to identify what will be a “safe level of sound” for alerting visually impaired and other pedestrians to the approach of a silent running EV.

Meetings have begun earlier this year and are also aimed at protecting runners, cyclists, and children.

“We have significant background in the area of pedestrian alerts dating to our work on our first electric car, the EV1,” Farah said, “The most important thing is to listen to the people who will interact with these vehicles in everyday life.”

Deborah Kent Stein, who chairs the NFB’s Committee on Automobile and Pedestrian Safety, said, “A recent report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) demonstrated that the silent operation of hybrid vehicles is an issue for all pedestrians, not just the blind. In certain situations, electric or hybrid vehicles are twice as likely to be involved in collisions with pedestrians. The NFB looks forward to working with the safety agency in the crafting of appropriate standards establishing an acceptable level of minimum vehicle sound.”

“The National Federation of the Blind appreciates the opportunity to work with General Motors on this problem,” said Dr. Marc Maurer, president of the National Federation of the Blind. “We urge all automobile manufacturers to work with the blind in designing vehicle sounds to alert us to the approach, speed and direction of vehicles so that both drivers and pedestrians can safely use America’s roadways.”

A low-level low-speed vehicular sound for EVs may be inevitable, though no formal federal regulations currently exist. Future legislation may arise in concert with input from the Society of Automotive engineers to develop a national standard.

A lack of consensus and standards among automakers could conceivably result in a virtual cacophony of discordant sounds once streets become filled with EVs from various automakers. Thus all cars should produce similar sounds, likely ruling-out the possibility of customizable “car tones,” as some pundits have speculated about.

Like it or not, the sound of silence appears to be on its way.

Below is GM’s video on the sound of the Volt:

Article Courtesty: www.gm-volt.com

Health Alerts: Macular Degeneration

10:55 AM CST on Tuesday, November 24, 2009
The New York Times

MACULAR DEGENERATION

Therapies can help prevent vision damage

Cases of age-related macular degeneration are expected to rise significantly by 2050, but better use of therapies is expected to lower the percentage of cases that result in vision loss and disability.

Scientists at Research Triangle Institute International analyzed existing data and projected the disease's future prevalence based on various treatment scenarios. Their study, published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, concludes that cases will increase from 9.1 million in 2010 to 17.8 million in 2050. They attribute almost all of the increases to aging of the U.S. population.

The disease causes deterioration of the macula, the main area of the retina, a thin tissue at the back of the eye where light-sensitive cells send signals to the brain. Damage to the macula results in blurred or distorted vision and blind spots.

Study authors say existing therapies could cut visual impairment by as much as 35 percent. One cost-effective way to delay the disease, researchers say, is through antioxidant vitamin therapy.

SOURCES: American Health Assistance Foundation; Archives of Ophthalmology

Carroll Center for the Blind Tech Fair

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EDITORIAL CONTACT:
Jack Sheehan
Director of Marketing
Vision Dynamics
203-271-1944
jack@visiondynamics.com

November annually provides many things for the visually impaired to be thankful for.

Thanksgiving Day and the Carroll Center for the Blind Tech Fair are two of them

Cheshire, CT – November 17, 2009.

There have been some really great fall days lately and that means Thanksgiving Day cannot be far off. Actually this year it happens to be November 26th, and that means the annual Carroll Center Tech Fair will be on Tuesday, November 24th, from 10:00 AM to 3 PM. in the Exhibitor Hall at The Carroll Center for the Blind, 770 Centre Street, Newton, MA.

This event provides an opportunity for all to come and see the many vision aids available for those who need help with any of the many forms of vision impairment. It also is a chance for the professionals in this field and the caretakers to learn about what they can use to help others. Vision Dynamics will be joining the many exhibitors in presenting products and explaining services.

We at Vision Dynamics really look forward to this event every year. It is an opportunity for our staff to shine! We get a chance to show all the many vision aids we carry and really emphasize all the changes and improvements. Our staff will be available to explain the features of these tools and advise on selecting the proper aid for each individual.

We have a couple of items to put the word out on this year. We have made some additions to our staff. Vision Dynamics is expanding our field staff to meet the commitments to our long term goals of extending our services in Southern New England.

We have added Marion O’Donnell in Eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and the Cape area. Marion will be using her 26 years of experience in the health care industry and her personal experience in caretaking for her Mother and Father. Both were visually impaired and Marion devoted many years to helping them and learning firsthand how to provide that help.

We have also added Dr. Rick Ely to the Western Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire area. Dr. Rick, visually impaired himself, brings a wealth of knowledge of our industry and a strong background in teaching people with vision impairments. Once again, a person able to share his personal experiences to those who need help.

Fall is traditionally harvest time for all. Come to the Tech Fair and harvest all the information there to enjoy a better life for you and your loved ones. What a great way to remind us of all of what we have to be grateful for on Thanksgiving Day!

Vision Dynamics is Southern New England’s premier company serving the needs of the Low Vision and Blind population. Its mission is to empower and inspire people with low vision, blindness, and learning difficulties with the hope, desire and ability to lead happy and independent lives. are more than a fashionable accessory.

They can save your eyes from permanent damage.

"We say it's like sunscreen for your eyes," said optician Arlen Happel at Mauer Eye Center.

Too much time outdoors without adequate eye protection could penetrate the retina and lead to cataracts, Macular Degeneration or skin cancer around the eyelids, according to Prevent Blindness America, a national volunteer health and safety organization.

Sunglasses should block ultraviolet radiation found in everyday sunlight. Look for a label that says the lenses offer 100 percent UV protection. Regular prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses can be coated with the clear UV solution, as UV light can otherwise refract through and intensify exposure.

Darker-tinted lenses don't mean more protection; they simply enhance comfort and vision in bright light.

If you're unsure whether your eyewear is protected, ask an eye doctor to test it with a UV detector.

"You don't see a lot of sunglasses that aren't (UV protected) anymore," Happel said.

Tinted clip-on lenses, designed to fit over your regular prescription glasses, offer UV protection and are available at area department stores and optical centers. However, the cheaper versions usually are lower quality and have potential for warping and distortion, said Cindi Nelson, an optician at The EyeCare Associates.

Nelson highly recommends polarized lenses, which protect the eyes and reduce glare while driving.

"You can have a real dark sunglass, but you still find yourself squinting, and that's the glare," she said.

Sunglasses often are mistakenly limited to hot temperatures and beaches but should be worn year-round, including on cloudy days. Snow skiers are as much at risk as boaters for sun-related eye damage.

"The reflection of the sun off the snow is probably equally as bad as that off of water, pavement or a car hood," Happel said.

The more sun your shades filter, the better, Happel said. That's why the latest trend of women wearing oversized lenses is beneficial to their health. Also, a brimmed hat helps block overhead or side light.

Don't forget about the kids. Prevent Blindness America suggests sunglasses that fit well, are impact resistant, don't have lenses that pop out of their frames and are large enough to shield the eyes from most angles.

"People don't think about it, but children are outside a lot," Nelson said.

Why You Should Use a Cane

Hello everyone! My name is Tracy and I am currently a member of the Vision Dynamics team. I have Macular Degeneration and Retinitis Pigmentosa and have had some exciting experiences using a cane. I'd love to share with you some ideas about moving more safely in your neighborhood and community.

First, it is a great way to communicate to others that you have a site problem. It takes the guess work out of the situation Many times when you have low vision you bump into things or may look a little disoriented. The cane puts it out there that you are visually impaired and not drunk.

Many folks think they don’t need it but don’t realize that they usually walk in the same places most of the time and become very familiar in their environment. It is when they are in a new place that they have difficulty. They don’t want to admit it and think that they have fooled everyone. It is hard to let everyone know you have a problem, but by doing so you are becoming part of those who are ambassadors for taking the steps necessary to be independent.

When using a cane you gather so much more information about the surface you are walking on. I do much better along with a cane than I do when someone is leading me. When you put your mobility into someone else’s hands, you are leaving it up to their interpretation.

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month

Palmetto Health Easley - Care You Can Believe In
August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month

How healthy is your child’s vision? This is an appropriate question to ask anytime but especially in August during Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month.

According to Prevent Blindness America, a volunteer eye health and safety organization founded in 1908, without good vision, a child’s ability to learn about the world becomes more difficult. Vision problems affect one in 20 preschoolers and one in four school-age children. Since many <a href="http://www.visiondynamics.com/EyesightInfo.htm"target="_blank">vision problems begin at an early age, it is very important that children receive proper eye care. If left untreated, eye problems can worsen and lead to other serious problems as well as affect learning ability, personality, and adjustment in school.

Here are some common eye problems:

• Lazy eye, or amblyopia, is a loss of vision in an eye that is not corrected by glasses alone.
• Crossed eyes, or strabismus, describes eyes that are not straight or do not line up with each other. If not treated, it can cause lazy eye or amblyopia.
• Color deficiency or color blindness does not literally mean blind to color. Instead, children with this condition have difficulty identifying some colors.
• Nearsightedness or myopia describes the condition when the eyeball is too long for the normal focusing power of the eye. This results in images of distant objects appearing blurred.
• Farsightedness or hyperopia is the condition where the eyeball is too short for the normal focusing power of the eye. In children, the lens in the eye accommodates for this error and provides clear vision for distance and usually near viewing, but with considerable effort that often causes fatigue and sometimes crossed eyes.
• Astigmatism results primarily from an irregular shape of the front surface of the cornea. Children with astigmatism typically see vertical lines more clearly than horizontal ones, and sometimes the reverse.

What are signs that may indicate your child has a vision problem? Prevent Blindness America provides the following tips to parents:

What do your child’s eyes look like?

• Eyes do not line up where one appears crossed or looks out
• Eyelids are red-rimmed, crusted or swollen
• Eyes are watery or red (inflamed)

How does your child act?

• Rubs eyes a lot
• Closes or covers one eye
• Tilts head or thrusts head forward
• Has difficulty in reading or doing other close-up work, or holds objects close to eyes to see
• Blinks more than usual or seems cranky when doing close-up work
• Describes objects as being blurry or hard to see
• Squints eyes or frowns

What could your child say?

• “My eyes are itchy,” “My eyes are burning,” or “My eyes feel scratchy.”
• “I can’t see very well.”
• After doing close-up work, your child says “I feel dizzy,” “I have a headache” or “I feel sick/nauseous.”
• “Everything looks blurry,” or “I see double.”

According to Tiffany Sullivan, Vision Health Initiative director, this program seeks to eliminate barriers that prevent low-income, uninsured children from receiving vision care so that they can receive the full benefits of being in school. She said, “The benefit of good vision is not just being able to see the chalkboard or being able to see 20/20. Healthy vision involves being able to use one’s eyes for life. Proper vision helps a child analyze and respond to what is seen and to understand the other senses. Vision is a learned ability, and problems with vision can affect the development, adjustment and achievement of a child.”

As we observe Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, if your child needs to be examined for vision problems, contact your child’s school nurse or try free vision screenings.

Clearview+ CCTV

Hello low vision friends, my name is Marge. But most importantly is that with this CCTV, I can continue my love of reading. It can magnify anything you put under it, from 2x to 72x its size. It’s extremely easy to use and the focus is very clear.
If one wants their independence back, this is the only way to go. If anyone has any questions, I can share my low vision experiences with you and tell you of other products that will help you with every day living problems. They work just like binoculars, except easier to use because they are hands-free, and more attractive with a modern, high tech frame. The main purpose of the Max TV Glasses is for watching television, but the glasses are multifunctional. They can be used in a variety of activities, like outdoors at the beach or bird watching, at church to see the altar, going to a movie, or at a sporting event. Max TV Glasses can be adjusted so that each eye lens can be focused separately. The glasses have a 2.1x Magnification and can focus on an object from 10 feet away to infinity. These glasses are one of the most comfortable and useful distance viewing devices.

"I love them and use them all the time. I would recommend them to anyone who's visually impaired."

Enjoying a day at the beach with Low Vision/Macular Degeneration

I monocular, my mp3 player so I My eyes are much more sensitive than the normal eye to brightness. It is so nice knowing there are so many different kinds of sunglasses that will help people with all types of eyes conditions see better.
My monocular is so cool, I can now watch my kids playing on the beach and have fun. This really
makes me happy. Of course I can see alot more than that but, I need to be careful I do not want to scare people. Who is that weirdo looking at us through the scope.
There are also many other choices for people to view things in the distance that will allow you to also see more clearly on the beach or wherever you want.
I remember seeing people relaxing reading a book on the beacj and I would say to myself I wish I could do that. Well I can, I use my mp3 player with a set of headphones and I read away. Nothing like reading a book on the beach and hearing the waves in the background.
I never leave home without my trusty hand held magnifier. You never know when you will need to look at something that just is not quite large enough. For me that is just about everything. Print is made for people with normal vision so I need to always be prepared.

Bottom line is my attitude. Now I have a positive I can attitude which makes my life so much better. There are so many thinmgs available to help people with all types of Vision Impaairments lead an independant and productive life.

Create a great day - Charlie

A Low Vision, Legally Blind Man with Macular Degeneration Shares His Story

- Triumphant over Disability -
- How a Blind Man’s Darkest Moments Led to Success and a Mission to Help Others -

Thirty years ago, Charlie Collins was a typical 10-year old fun loving boy, riding dirt bikes through the woods in his home town of Cheshire, CT., playing baseball and attending the local elementary school. At the age of 13, though, his ordinary childhood ended, and his extraordinary journey began. Charlie’s life was shattered with devastating news; he suffered from a rare, untreatable eye disease that causes progressive blindness - Juvenile Macular Degeneration. In fact, three of Charlie’s siblings from their close-knit family of six were also diagnosed with the genetic disease.

During the next several years, while his blindness progressed, Collins battled with mental and emotional demons. He experienced several stages of distress; anger, shame, disbelief. He could not participate with classmates in most school activities, he was picked on, ostracized, he felt stupid and never quite fit in anywhere. His self-esteem hit rock bottom. “I felt completely alone out there and unequipped to live an independent, productive life.” Doctors told him nothing could be done to help him. “I focused only on the problem and never a solution,” says Collins. He considered suicide, but he just couldn’t bear to do it.
